Understanding
Zionism
Before
one can understand the present, on going, Israeli/Palestinian
War (IPW), one must understand Zionism. In order to understand
Zionism one must understand the history of Zionism. In order
to understand the point of view of The New Israel (TNI),
one must *understand Zionism. *Understand: to grasp or comprehend
the significance or meaning or nature of something.
Although
the term Zionism was used before Theodore Herzl wrote his
pamphlet, written in German, “Der Judenstaat (The
Jewish State) 1896. … it did not take hold or become
a movement among the Jewish people ..until after he wrote
it. Therefore, Herzl must be considered the father the Jewish
State.
The
writing of Der Judenstaat was motivated by what is known
as The Dreyfus Affair. In 1894 Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a
Jewish officer in the French army was unjustly accused of
treason. Herzl witnessed mobs shouting “Death To The
Jews” in France as a result of the accusation.
Dreyfus was completely acquitted of the charge.
Herzel
was a newspaper reporter who covered the Dreyfus trial and
therefore witnessed the hatred expressed toward the Jewish
people, first hand. He also realized that Captain Dreyfus
was falsely accused because he was a Jew.
He
concluded that the hatred was not just an individual problem,
but it was also a national problem that had gone on for
over 1,500 years. and showed no sign of slowing down. He
felt that the Jewish people needed a refuge where they would
be safe. He expressed this in the Judenstaat, and he ignited
the Zionist moment.
Herzl
wrote another book entitled Altnueland (Old New Land) in
1902. He pictured the future Jewish State as a new society
that was to rise in the Land Of Israel on a cooperative
basis. He viewed The Jewish State as one in which distinct
ethnic or cultural or religious groups can exist together
in society.
After
all, he had seen what bigotry in France did to the Jewish
people. Obviously he would not want to see racism repeated
in a Jewish state.
So
the conclusion must be drawn that modern, militant Zionism,
that governs Israel today under Ariel Sharon perverts and
shames Herzl's vision.
TNI
sees the future of Israel as a spiritual leader, and as
an advanced society:" A Light Unto The Nations,"
exactly as Theodore Herzl did.
If
He could see Israel today according to his vision, he would
be disappointed to say the least.
The
next landmark in the historical development of Zionism was
the Balfour Declaration. Shown as written, below:
The Balfour Declaration (1917)
The
British Foreign Secretary, Arthur James Balfour, wrote to
Jewish leader Lord Rothschild, to assure him that his government
supported the ideal of providing a homeland for the Jews.
The British hoped thereby to win more Jewish support for
the Allies in the First World War. The "Balfour Declaration"
became the basis for international support for the founding
of the modern state of Israel. The letter was published
a week later in The Times of London as reproduced here.

Office November 2nd, 1917
Dear
Lord Rothschild:
I
have much pleasure in conveying to you. on behalf of His
Majesty's
Government, the following declaration of sympathy with Jewish
Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved
by, the Cabinet:
His
Majesty's Government view with favor the establishment in
Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and
will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement
of this object, it being clearly understood that nothing
shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious
rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine…
nothing shall be done which my prejudice the civil and religious
rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine,
or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any
other country.
I
should be grateful if you would bring this declaration to
the knowledge of the Zionist Federation.

The
Zionist were quick to grab onto this document enthusiastically,
because it provided the first concrete inroad for the formation
of a Jewish State in Palestine.
The
only thing is that they have failed to recognize the stipulation:
“it being clearly understood that nothing shall be
done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights
of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine."
So
the Zionists used only that part of the Balfour Declaration
that they wanted and threw away the rest.
There
can be no real understanding of Zionism, without seeing
the philosophy of Vladimir “Ze’ve" Jabotinsky.
These are his words:
In
a paper he wrote entitled; The Iron Wall (We and the Arabs
(1923)
Contrary
to the excellent rule of getting to the point immediately,
I must begin this article with a personal introduction.
The author of these lines is considered to be an enemy of
the Arabs, a proponent of their expulsion, etc. This is
not true. My emotional relationship to the Arabs is the
same as it is to all other peoples – polite indifference.
My political relationship is characterized by two principles.
First: the expulsion of the Arabs from Palestine is absolutely
impossible in any form. There will always be two nations
in Palestine – which is good enough for me, provided
the Jews become the majority.
Two
brief remarks: In the first place, if anyone objects that
this point of view is immoral, I answer: It is not true;
either Zionism is moral and just or it is immoral and unjust.
But that is a question that we should have settled before
we became Zionists. Actually we have settled that question,
and in the affirmative.
We
hold that Zionism is moral and just. And since it is moral
and just, justice must be done, no matter whether Joseph
or Simon or Ivan or Achmet agree with it or not. There is
no other morality.
Herzl,
The Balfour declaration and Jabotinshy are all landmarks
in the growth and path of Zionism. There were numerous Zionist
philosopher and Zionist organizations and meetings…
but the truth is that nothing ever really made any headway
in getting a Jewish homeland in Israel until after the Holocaust…the
persecution of the Jewish people in Europe and the extermination
of 6 million Jews. After the Holocaust which was really
after WWII, the Zionists saw a powerful opportunity to expedite
their plans which was to establish Eretz Yisrael…
The land of Israel.
The
British were withdrawing from Palestine which they had occupied
.
They could no longer hold on to it, because of the damages
of the war. They needed to spend their resources on rebuilding
England.
In
May 1948 The United Nations along with the support of The
United States, Britain and France declared Israel as an
independent state. It was to their advantage to place a
western leaning people in the vacuum that was created by
the British withdrawal. Israel is in a powerfully strategic
location on the eastern end of the Mediterranean…
and it provides this powers with a beachhead into the oil
rich middle east…The timing was perfect.
The
real question is, what was the need for Zionism to continue
after they had archived their goal of a Jewish State in
1948 … but Zionists had ambitions far beyond what
they were given by the United Nations.
Perhaps
the best answer to this question comes from the present
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon himself in his Autobiography
“Warrior" first addition:1989.
Sharon
says that Morechai Scheinerman, his grand father “trekked
to Israel first in 1910." He says: “although
his hopes for a quick return of the Jews to Israel did not
materialize, he did manage to instill in my father his deep
longing for Eretz Israel.”
He
says “Both my father and grandfather knew that a scientific
knowledge of agricuatiue would be important for someone
who was going to The Promised Land."
On
page 209 Sharon says, “What I thought was that regardless
of whatever political solution the future might hold we
should have to keep the high controlling terrain, to protect
and give depth to the tiny heartland along the coast to
be able to defend ourselves on the line of the River Jordan
and to secure Jerusalem as the capital of the Jewish people
forever.That was an indispensable necessary minimum."
He
continues, “The first job then was to establish actual
control on the ground. I come from a family of what might
be called “Pragmatic Zionists” People who understood
that in a precarious and violent world, Jewish existence
could not be left to trust or paper agreements."
Survival
depended not on faith in someone else's good will, but on
facts actually building on the land and actually defending
it.”
On
page 279 Sharon states: “ Begin (Menachem Begin then
Prime Minister of Israel) belonged to the tradition of “Political
Zionism. Like them he was a man who believed in the power
of words and legal terms and consequently he gave high priority
to such things as pronouncements, declarations, and formal
agreements. Underneath the political Zionists believed in
achievements as a results of Political acts and deeds."
"This
approach was diametrically opposed to that taken by “Pragmatic
Zionist" Circles (where Sharon places himself) The
idea in “pragmatic Zionism", Sharon says was
to create "facts on the ground, reclaim another acre,
drain another swamp, acquire another cow."
COMMENTARY:
Dear Friends, The boundary wall that is being build to divide
the Israelis and the Palestinians is Sharon's monument to
his and his family's "practical Zionism. " It
is his last great "fact on the ground. " He has
advanced into the West Bank and he has taking claim to it.
How
Israel has allowed this man, who committed crimes against
humanity at Sabra and Shatilla, and was kicked out of the
Israeli government to come back to leadership is unbelievable.
To
think that he could lead his country to peace is like saying
one can put out a fire by pouring gasoline on it.
According
to The Bible Of Judaism, this is why Israel was punished
by God. They let evil rulers guide their path.
